Let’s go over some questions you might be thinking about now that you have a few business ideas running around in your head now.
I believe it’s the one that you have a passion for. There is a pretty extensive list above to give you some idea of what business stands out to you or at least a few to consider. When looking at this list, think about, what might best fit into your schedule, what do I already know, what am I interested in, what is my budget for starting a business? The answers to these questions can help you decide what the best business is for you.
This is not a one size fits all question. One business that is great for you isn’t going to be great for another. Starting a business is hard work, especially when you already have a full plate. The best business is going to be one that you can spend many hours on and something that you love doing (or think you’ll love doing). You definitely need to be interested in it.
If you have to spend a lot of money to get your business going, you may never be able to start it if you don’t have extra funds to spend on it. I guess what I’m saying is, choose something that you can act on now and maybe grow into down the road.
There are definitely businesses that cost less to start. To run a business legally there will be expenses. However, the cheapest business to start would be one where you already have most of the expensive items you need in order to operate your business. Online businesses are typically cheaper to start if you already have a computer and internet but you might need a website. Below are some things to ask yourself.
Let’s say you want to be a photographer that sells prints online or teaches others how to edit photographs. Do you already have a camera and the extra gear you need to take the kind of photographs you’re planning your business around? Is what you have good enough to get started? Can purchase more equipment later when you start making some money?
If you already have the knowledge to start your business idea, then you’ll save money on courses or training to get going. If not, you’ll need to factor in what your course(s) or training will cost you. There’s a lot of free information online that might fill in any gaps you might have but it might take longer to get your business up and running. Investing in some training could be beneficial and get things moving faster for you.
Below are some expenses to think about. The first 4 might be things you have covered already. I discuss the rest of the list in detail in my post, Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Starting an Online Business if you want more information on those items.
Computer
Internet Connection
Equipment/Software needed
Website
Selling Platform
Business Registration
Contracts
Creating a Business Entity
Business Insurance
Online Payment System
Separate Business Bank Account
Program to Track Business Expenses
This definitely takes planning and determination. Likely, you’re already so busy you can’t even imagine fitting in one more thing. I get it! I know you can do it. If you have a strong desire to start your business, you can make it happen. Below are some time saving tips to try out!
Plan Your Meals. Planning out our meals ahead of time not only will reduce stress around mealtimes it can save money on your pocketbook too. Think about meal planning at least a week at a time but two weeks to a month is better!
Get up Early. This is a tough one for me but it is so worth it. I find that I’m so much more productive working away at my tasks when the house is quiet and I’m undisturbed.
Time Blocking. If you’re anything like me, there are a million things going on in your head like a revolving to do list, at any given moment. Time blocking helps to prioritize your precious time and help you schedule in time for your business and your family. This really helps you make time for your new business venture.
Ask for Help. Ask family members for help with household chores. Arrange some time play dates for your kids for a few hours every once in a while. It’s ok to ask for help.
Learn to Say NO. This is a hard one for me but I’m getting better at it. Don’t overextend yourself and feel obligated to sign up for every volunteer opportunity. I’m not saying don’t help others but you may need to reduce some of these types of activities to help reduce your own overwhelm of trying to move forward on starting your own business.
Make Good Use of Your Time. This one can work really well with time blocking. Though it’s more than that. It’s planning out the use of your time during specified blocks of time. For example, during a morning commute, you can listen to a business related podcast. Work on the tasks that use more brain power when you are most alert and uninterrupted and save other tasks for when the kids are playing and you can easily pick back up where you left off.
You just get started! Well yes and no. There is certainly some planning that you should do first. I hope this post helped give you an idea of what business you want to start or at least a few to consider. I have written an in depth post, Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Starting an Online Business that explains steps on starting your own online business. This guide is full of a ton of information to get you on your way to starting your own business.
I suggest spending some time thinking about what you enjoy, what you’re good at and what you think you can spend several hours working on. Starting a business takes a lot of effort but if you have a plan and invest your time on it, you can succeed! Working a full time job while getting your business started is challenging but you’re amazing and I know you can do it!
